I’m leaving in 3 days. Paula is coming up this weekend to help me pack. Since I will be in my Corvette It’s important to pack the right things but not too many items.

Thanks for the great feedback and well wishes. My next post will probably be Monday night. Stay tuned!

Some of you already know what I’m doing, but for those that don’t, here is what is happening:

On August 30th, I am leaving on a month long trip across country on Route 66. It starts in Santa Monica and goes to Chicago. Then from Chicago I will drive to Flint, Michigan to visit family and attend my 60th high school reunion on September 18th. So I have given myself plenty of time to get there.

One of my best friends and I would watch the TV show, Route 66, in high school. For you younger friends that aren’t familiar with that show, it was about two guys that drove on Route 66 in a Corvette and had some adventure each week. Usually involving saving some damsel in distress. We decided that when we got older we would get a Corvette and do that trip. Well, at age 78 I have finally saved up enough money to buy the Corvette so here I go. My buddy Jerry can’t make it but will follow on this blog. A lot of people have a Bucket List I suppose. This is the only thing on my Bucket List right now so it is getting completed finally.

I have been sort of preparing for this trip since my Senior year of high school, 1960. However, now the real preparation is taking place. Deciding which clothes to pack is the first decision. The Corvette doesn’t have a real trunk but actually has a lot quite a bit of room in the back. My plan is to pack a small duffel type bag with clothes I will be wearing most of the days – shorts, shirts, socks, etc.

As far as planning the route, that is easy as I plan to stay on Route 66 for the entire length, which is Santa Monica to Chicago. On August 30th I’m driving down to Rancho Palos Verdes to spend the night with my good friends Vall and Tom Light, then picking up Route 66 in Santa Monica. The only hotel room booked so far is at the Grand Canyon, where I will spend two nights and two days. That is a detour of Route 66 of course. One other detour is in Missouri where I plan to go see the house I was born in. I was born on a cotton farm in Hayward, Missouri and am hoping the house is still there. Other than that, I will just play it by ear one day at a time.

So, if you have any interest in following me, I plan to blog each night when I reach my destination for that day. I will try to make it as interesting as possible and include pictures. The Corvette actually has a camera in the front so I will record some of the trip and edit it down to show for those interested when I get back.

Wish me luck!
